- sell one of their own players to another club;
- sign a free agent.
To be valid, every deal must be filed with the League before the window closes.

"Deadline day" is the last day available: at 8pm on 1 September the League's offices close, and any transfer filed after that time is not registered. That's why the final hours of the market are often the most frantic, with deals wrapped up at the very last minute.
One exception concerns free agents: a player without a contract can, under certain conditions, be registered even after the window has closed, because it's not a transfer between two clubs.
